With clear skies many nights of this end-of-year personal retreat, I make time to go out and look at the cosmos in the middle of the night and ponder my place. A powerful dance between Venus, Mars and Saturn commenced this year on Winter Solstice, December 21. Their cosmic energies strongly amplify themes of love, power, and maturity through the first half of 2014.
We begin 2014 with a New Moon in Capricorn on January 1, along with a planetary mega-activation of the Cardinal signs. Most of us are already feeling, as well as possibly witnessing in others close to us, these strong energies, which are about “initiation, leadership, and the courage to create a new beginning.”
The cosmic emphasis this season is on “redefining your values and priorities, reevaluating and renegotiating relationships, and regenerating your feminine energy.” These energies imprint the entire year ahead.
With Mars exerting its strong influence and testing our ability to act as agents of love, it’s important to remember to pause when we may be tempted to react and get drawn into power struggles. Channel this intense energy into healthy outlets, such as vigorous physical activity and creative expression. To allow the fullness of healing, take space to contemplate that “people who are triggering you are friends of your soul,” shining a light on old, hidden patterns that no longer serve you and may be blocking your power.
There is the need to make connections between the personal and the political and to frame personal values and priorities within the context of our greater, collective story. Our higher selves will be influenced to take a courageous stand for the power of love, beauty, justice and peace. We will be asked to do the personal, relational work to become sensitive to others’ needs and thus more able to collaborate and cooperate to implement a shared, life-serving vision. Andrea Gibson’s spoken word poem “Say Yes” (the first in this trio of poems in the below video) is a Song for this New Moon and perhaps for the entirety of 2014.
“for the ones who know how powerful we are, who know we can sound the music in the people around us simply by playing our own strings, for the ones who sing life into broken wings…. tonight Saturn is on his knees proposing with all of his 10,000 rings that whatever song we’ve been singing we sing it even more, the world needs us now more than it ever has before…. if you’re handing out flashlights in the dark, start handing out stars…”
